Virginia is distributing free hives and equipment to beekeepers to increase bee populations
In an attempt to boost rapidly dwindling bee populations, the US state of Virginia has come up with a new initiative called The Beehive Distribution Program.
Under this program, beehives and beekeeping equipment will be distributed directly to eligible state beekeepers under the supervision of Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS).
Residents of Virginia who are 18 years of age or older are eligible to receive up to three beehive units per year. Individuals who receive a beehive unit will be registered as beekeepers with VDACS, allowing for periodic inspection of beehives by the agency.
It should be noted that bees are the world’s most important pollinator of food crops. It is estimated that one third of the food that we consume each day relies on pollination mainly by bees.
